1990
Viva Las Vegas /
It's Now Or Never (by Paul McCartney) (NME CD PRO 1990)
UK-only promotional release for "The Last Temptation Of Elvis" charity album; limited to a reported 500 copies. Cardboard title sleeve with complete credits for both tracks on rear. Discs were actually pressed in France.

Chicken Lips And Lizard Hips / Itsy Bitsy Spider (by Little Richard) (COL 656735 2)
Withdrawn Australia-only release coupling two songs from Disney's "For Our Children" benefit album; marks the only worldwide appearance of "Chicken Lips..." on an official single of any format. Nice colour cardboard picture sleeve sports a child's drawing of some flowers, taken from the original LP artwork. Mysteriously, Bruce's name does not get mention anywhere here (which is probably the reason for the recall), although his track is listed on both the back cover and the disc itself. Promotional copies (same catalogue number) either featured gold stamps or white “Sample Record Not For Sale” stickers on their rear sleeves.

1992
Human Touch / Souls Of The Departed / The Long Goodbye
Released throughout Europe (COL 657872 2) and as part of an Australian double-CD set (see below). Slimline jewel case with colour picture insert featuring similar overall artwork to the European 7-inch/12-inch versions.

Human Touch (Radio Edit) (COL SAMPCD 1622)
Austrian promotional 1-track single including a 5:08 edited version that also was included on the “Greatest Hits” album three years later. Slimline jewel case with blue/red title insert.

Human Touch (Radio Edit) / Same (album version) (COL CSK 74273)
US promotional pressing. Standard jewel case with regular colour picture insert.

Human Touch / Souls Of The Departed / The Long Goodbye - Picture Disc (COL 657872 5)
UK-only release in special blue cardboard slipcase with "Bruce Springsteen" logo cut-out on front; disc is housed inside an extra gold-foil inner bag and depicts the image from the UK/European 7-inch sleeves (Bruce in shades against a desert sky) alongside white and black lettering on red background. "Limited" edition of at least 25,000 copies; each one is individually numbered on rear of outer sleeve. Note that an identically designed, Austrian-pressed picture CD was simultaneously issued in a standard slimline jewel case with common insert and same catalogue number.

Better Days
1-track promotional single released in Europe (COL SAMPCD 1623; slimline jewel case) and the US (COL CK 74274; standard jewel case) with different black/red title inlays.

Better Days / Tougher Than The Rest (live) / Part Man, Part Monkey
Released throughout Europe (COL 657890 2) and as part of an Australian double-CD set (see below). Slimline jewel case with colour picture insert featuring similar overall artwork to the European 7-inch/12-inch versions.

Human Touch / Souls Of The Departed / The Long Goodbye plus
Better Days / Tougher Than The Rest (live) / Part Man, Part Monkey - Double 5-inch Set (COL 657890 5)
Limited Australia-only release collecting the first two CD EP's of 1992 in one standard-size jewel case with both colour inserts known from the regular UK/European issues.

57 Channels (And Nothin' On) (album version) (CBS PRO 691)
Austrian 1-track promotional single in blue cardboard title sleeve with red/white type.

57 Channels (And Nothin’ On) (album version) (COL CSK 4599)
US promotional 1-track single. Red disc in paper sleeve with title sticker.

57 Channels (And Nothin’ On) (Little Steven Mix Version 1 Edit) / Same (Little Steven Mix Version 2) (COL CSK 4670)
US “57 Channels: The Remixes” promotional single. Blue disc in paper sleeve with title sticker.

57 Channels (And Nothin' On) (album version) / Stand On It / Janey Don't You Lose Heart - Picture Disc (COL 658138 5)
Limited UK-only release with different bonus tracks to regular issues, both of which made their second-ever appearances on the digital format here (although the cover incorrectly claims that they were "previously unavailable on CD"). Cardboard digipak with familiar 7-inch/12-inch sleeve design on front; the disc itself features a weird colour picture of an empty-faced guy sitting next to his TV set.

57 Channels (And Nothin’ On) (album version) / Same (Little Steven Mix Version 1 Edit) (COL 658138 1)
Rare Austrian export pressing for the French market. Colour cardboard picture sleeve has the “Bruce Springsteen” logo moved to the top, whereas artwork for all other European issues featured said logo imprinted on the bottom (note that a similar variation also exists for the Dutch 7-inch vinyl issue of this single).

Leap Of Faith (album version) / Same (live) / 30 Days Out (COL APCD 12)
Extremely rare promotional CD manufactured in Austria and believed to have been intended for export to the UK. The reason for this item’s scarcity is that it most likely was withdrawn due to a misprinted/mispressed disc that lists “Gloria’s Eyes” as the third track (see scan below), but actually plays “30 Days Out” instead. Slimline jewel case with anonymous black insert featuring red/white “Columbia Advance Promo Copy CD” lettering only.

Leap Of Faith (album version) / Same (live) / 30 Days Out (COL 658369 2)
Slimline jewel case with colour picture insert. Released in Europe and Australia with identical catalogue numbers.

Lucky Town / Leap Of Faith (live) / 30 Days Out (COL 658761 2)
Austrian export pressing for the French market. Overall artwork is similar to the above European/Australian "Leap Of Faith" 3-track EP's, apart from a notably different typeface used for the title lettering. Also issued as a 2-track version with cardboard picture sleeve which omitted "30 Days Out" (COL 658761 1); either variant is quite hard to find.

Leap Of Faith / The Big Payback / Shut Out The Light (COL 658369 5)
Limited second edition of the EP; marked the first (and, for more than 11 years, only) official CD appearance of "The Big Payback". Pressed in both Holland and the UK with same catalogue numbers. Colour picture insert similar to standard issues. Black disc with silver type.

Roll Of The Dice / Leap Of Faith (live) / 30 Days Out (SONY SRCS 6599)
Japan-only release; marks the only appearance of "Roll Of The Dice" on an official single of any format. Overall packaging (apart from a slightly different typeface) and bonus tracks are identical to initial UK/European issues of "Leap Of Faith", but this item also contained a unique 16-page booklet featuring 1992 tour dates and (partially incorrect) set lists. Issued in a standard-size jewel case which originally came shrinkwrapped with obi strip.

If I Should Fall Behind (album version) / Same (live version) / One Step Up / Meeting Across The River (COL 658898 2)
Slimline jewel case with black-and-white picture insert. Released in Europe and Australia (where standard stock copies were also distributed as promos that had “Promotion Only Not For Sale” stamps added to the inserts [pictured below]) with identical catalogue numbers.

1993
Lucky Town (live version) / Same (album version) (COL SAMPCD 1795)
Very rare promotional single pressed in Austria. Black/red cardboard title sleeve. Contains a unique 3:34 edit of the song’s “MTV Plugged” live version which has the second guitar solo omitted.

Lucky Town (live version) / Same (album version) / Human Touch (live) (COL 659228 2)
Issued in the UK and Europe with no remarkable variations; all discs were pressed in Austria. Came in slimline jewel case with colour picture insert. Also issued as a 2-track CD with cardboard picture sleeve which omitted the live version of "Human Touch" (COL 659228 1).

Streets Of Philadelphia (COL SAMPCD 2063)
Promotional 1-track single pressed in Austria which, as most other international 1993 “Streets Of Philadelphia” promos, contains the full 4:13 version of the song from the “Philadelphia” soundtrack album. Plain black cardboard sleeve with white title graphics.

Streets Of Philadelphia (COL XPCD 371)
Rare UK promotional 1-track CD with unique title insert.

Streets Of Philadelphia plus tracks by Maria Callas, Peter Gabriel, Spin Doctors and Neil Young (EPIC XPCD 373)
Austria-only “Highlights From The Motion Picture Soundtrack ‘Philadelphia’” promotional sampler issued in standard jewel case with picture insert featuring same overall artwork as the commercial "Philadelphia" soundtrack album. Note that although both the packaging and the disc itself list a running time of 4:13 for "Streets Of Philadelphia", the song actually clocks in at 3:50.

Streets Of Philadelphia plus tracks by Peter Gabriel, Spin Doctors and Neil Young (EPIC 2-000051)
Very rare Argentine promotional EP in cardboard picture sleeve with Spanish song title translations (“Calles De Filadelfia”) on rear and on the disc itself.

Streets Of Philadelphia / If I Should Fall Behind (live) / Growin' Up (live acoustic) / The Big Muddy (live) (COL 660065 2)
Very rare promotional edition of the EP sent out as an "invitation card" for the movie premiere of "Philadelphia" in Sweden, although discs were imported from Austria. Black-and-white picture insert features images of Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, a red "Philadelphia" logo, and the imprint "Inbjudan till Galapremiär" in white letters on front; back flap has company logos of several sponsors including Martini and René Barbier. Issued in a slimline jewel case.

1994
Streets Of Philadelphia plus tracks by Alice In Chains, Peter Frampton, Pearl Jam and Spin Doctors (EPIC PRCD-96070)
Rare promotional “Sony Music Rock” EP manufactured in Canada for distribution in Mexico; contains the full 4:13 “Philadelphia” soundtrack album version. Black cardboard title sleeve.

Streets Of Philadelphia / If I Should Fall Behind (live) / Growin' Up (live acoustic) / The Big Muddy (live) (COL 660179 2)
Australian issue with same bonus tracks and overall cover design as standard UK/European issues, but both the inlay and the disc itself have "Growin' Up" misspelt as "Grown' Up".

Streets Of Philadelphia / If I Should Fall Behind (live) / Growin' Up (live acoustic) / Light Of Day (live) (COL 44K 77383)
US-only release in this particular form; marks the only official single appearance of "Light Of Day" (all other worldwide CD pressings featured the live version of "The Big Muddy" as the third bonus track). Picture insert with standard overall artwork. Note that there also is a second US issue (COL 38K 77384) coupling "Streets..." with the 1992 MTV performance of "Atlantic City".

1995
Born To Run / Hungry Heart
(SONY XDCS 93176)
Extremely rare Japan-only promotional release for the “Greatest Hits” album. Standard jewel case features two different colour inserts (front and back) recreating the respective original Japanese 7-inch single sleeve artwork for either song. The disc itself also is designed to look like a vinyl 45, including an “orange label” imprint. This certainly is the scarcest of all Springsteen CD singles.

Murder Incorporated (COL SAMPCD 2617 1)
Promotional 1-track single pressed in Austria and the UK. Black-and-white cardboard picture sleeve. Also issued in the US with different catalogue number (CSK 6947) and standard-size jewel case.

Murder Incorporated (COL PRCD 96329)
Rare Mexican 1-track promotional single in lime green cardboard title sleeve with white lettering.

Secret Garden (album version) / Thunder Road (live ’92) (COL 661295 1)
Austrian export pressing for France in unique colour cardboard picture sleeve featuring a still of Bruce from the “Secret Garden” promo video.

Secret Garden (album version) plus tracks by Pink Floyd and Silverchair (COL 2-000168)
Rare Argentina-only promotional EP in cardboard sleeve; Spanish song title translation (“Jardin Secreto”) on both back cover and disc.

Secret Garden (album version) (COL 899.112)
Rare Brazilian promotional 1-track CD in regular jewel case with black title inserts featuring white/red type.

Secret Garden (album version) (COL PRCD 96363)
Rare Mexican 1-track promotional single in cardboard picture sleeve.

Secret Garden (album version) / Same (string version) / Murder Incorporated (live) Thunder Road (live ‘92) / Pink Cadillac / Roulette (SONY SRCS 7632)
Japanese pressing issued in a standard-size jewel case with 14-page bilingual lyric booklet whose front depicts the familiar "roses" image overlaid with a unique green tone. Originally came with white obi strip; track line-up is exclusive to this issue. Green disc with white and silver type.

Murder Incorporated / Because The Night (live) (COL 661313 1)
Murder Incorporated / Because The Night (live) / Pink Cadillac / 4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) (COL 661313 2)
France-only releases imported from Austria; with the 2-track cardboard sleeve issue apparently having been withdrawn. Both versions originally came shrinkwrapped with black stickers.

Hungry Heart (album version) / Same (Berlin 95) / Streets Of Philadelphia (live) / Thunder Road (live ‘95) / Murder Incorporated (live) (COL 662315 2)
CD-only release issued in several European countries (with discs usually pressed in Austria). Black-and-white picture insert with two different outdoor shots of Bruce in East Berlin, and blue/white/red type throughout; credits erroneously state that the three live songs were recorded in "May 1995" (the actual recording date was April 5). The CD itself is a picture disc featuring a grainy monochrome still from the appropriate video clip which depicts Springsteen and his all-German sidekick musicians onstage. Some copies came with a white sticker on front listing all bonus tracks, while others carried a black one just reading, "incl. Hungry Heart Berlin 95" instead. Also issued as a 2-track single (coupling the album version of "Hungry Heart" and the live "Streets Of Philadelphia") with cardboard picture sleeve and different catalogue number (662315 1). It is of note that the UK pressing (662625 2) did not include "Murder Incorporated" and was a plain white disc with red/blue title lettering.

Hungry Heart (Berlin 95) - Box Set (COLUMBIA; no individual catalogue number)
Very rare Germany-only promotion package consisting of the above 5-track CD (with either black or white sticker), an exclusive VHS tape (which comes in a unique cardboard slipcase depicting a black-and-white shot of Bruce sitting on the hood of a Porsche Spyder in front of the Brandenburg Gate, and includes the regular "Hungry Heart" clip as well as additional behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot at East Berlin's "Cafe Eckstein") plus a 4-page booklet with unique photos and a detailed time schedule of that rather bizarre event in either German or English language (the latter variant being the less common of the two). All items come packaged inside an A4-size box made of plain corrugated cardboard and carrying a black-and-white "limited edition" sticker on the lid.

Hungry Heart (album version) (COL PRCD 96488)
Rare Mexican 1-track promotional single in basic black cardboard title sleeve with white lettering.

1996
The Ghost Of Tom Joad / Straight Time
(live) / Sinaloa Cowboys (live) / Darkness On The Edge Of Town (live acoustic) - Picture Disc (COL 663031 2)
Limited UK-only release in black-and-white cardboard digipak featuring a shot of Bruce standing by the side of a highway with a cowboy hat on (also used for the UK 7-inch vinyl picture disc) and a red sticker mentioning all live bonus tracks on front; the CD bears the same image as the cover to great effect.

The Ghost Of Tom Joad / Meeting Across The River / One Step Up / Nebraska - Picture Disc (COL 663031 5)
Second UK picture CD issue sporting an exclusive and very nice live shot from the 1995/96 solo acoustic tour; marks the only appearance of "Nebraska" on an official single of any format. Came in a standard slimline jewel case with picture insert.

The Ghost Of Tom Joad plus tracks by Michael Jackson and Michael Bolton (COL 2-000195)
Rare Argentina-only promotional EP in cardboard sleeve; Spanish song title translation (“El Fantasma De Tom Joad”) on disc.

Youngstown (COL SAMPCD 3307)
Very rare 1-track promotional CD pressed in Austria for exclusive distribution in France. Unique cardboard picture sleeve. Never released commercially.

Youngstown / The Ghost Of Tom Joad (COL SAMP 720)
Australia-only promotion single; not released commercially. Issued in a plain black die-cut cardboard sleeve.

Dead Man Walkin' (COL SAMPCD 3315)
Austrian promotion-only 1-track single. Attractive black-and-white/sepia cardboard gatefold picture sleeve with same front artwork as commercial issues; inside features song lyrics and four small stills from the movie. Blue promo sticker on rear. A number of copies came with a blank money order form for the Austrian Amnesty International donation account wrapped around the disc. Other 1-track promo CD's of the song do also exist from both the US and Australia, although there was no commercial release in either of those countries.

Missing / Darkness On The Edge Of Town (live acoustic) / Born In The U.S.A. (live acoustic) / Spare Parts (live acoustic) (COL 663508 2)
Originally only issued in Europe and South Africa (different catalogue number: COL CDSIN 125) before being included as a bonus disc with the 1997 Australian/Japanese tour edition digipaks of "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" (see "CD Albums" section for full details on these). Picture insert with same Bruce photo as the "Dead Man Walkin'" CD, but featuring a more prominent layout (in straight black-and-white) as well as different, typewriter-style title graphics. A 1-track promo (SAMPCD 3558) and a commercial 2-track version (663508 1) do also exist; both came in cardboard picture sleeves. Note that the 5-track EP - which even managed to enter the charts in Norway, peaking at No. 17 - was also available with a special French export edition of the "Greatest Hits" CD album (again, see appropriate section for details).

Blood Brothers (alternate version) / High Hopes / Murder Incorporated (live) / Secret Garden (string version) / Without You - Picture Disc (Europe: COL XPCD 2104 / US: COL CSK 8879)
Exclusively available as a bonus with the "Blood Brothers" VHS home video. Great cardboard picture sleeve with a unique, sepia-tone shot of Bruce playing guitar and harmonica in front of a studio mic, and multi-coloured lettering as used for the video cover; the disc itself features the same image with tracklisting. Tracks 1 and 2 (recorded for "Greatest Hits" with the reformed E Street Band) initially were unique to this CD before turning up again on the two European "Secret Garden" reissues a couple of months later (see below), while the special versions of "Secret Garden" and "Murder Incorporated" were previously available in most parts of the world; leaving "Without You" (another "Greatest Hits" outtake) as the only otherwise unavailable song on this EP. Interestingly, the rear sleeve bears a "Not For Resale" legend normally found on promotional releases only; just as the catalogue number prefixes “XPCD” and “CSK” are usually assigned for non-commercial pressings.

1997
Secret Garden
(album version) / Missing / High Hopes / The Ghost Of Tom Joad   (COL 664236 2)
The first of two European reissues tying in with the soundtrack album for the "Jerry Maguire" movie starring Tom Cruise, which also included the lead track. Colour picture insert featuring two different stills from the "Secret Garden" promo video (with the rear shot being of such poor quality not even the most unscrupulous bootlegger would have used it); some copies came with a circular red promo sticker for the film. An Austrian 2-track pressing (664236 1) does also exist.

Secret Garden (string version) / Blood Brothers (alternate version) / Streets of Philadelphia / Highway 29 (COL 664324 5)
Second Europe-only "Jerry Maguire" reissue version with different bonus tracks. Picture insert is based on the design for 664236 2, but has an alternate layout.

Secret Garden (album version) / The Ghost Of Tom Joad / Straight Time (live) / Sinaloa Cowboys (live) (COL 664021 2)
Australian reissue featuring a unique track line-up as well as totally different artwork to either of the above European pressings, reminiscent of the earlier "Missing" EP.

Secret Garden (“Z100 Jerry Maguire Mix”) (Z100; no catalogue number)
Very rare promotional CD produced by New York radio station Z100 and exclusively given away to listeners as a competition prize; contains their unique “Jerry Maguire Mix” of “Secret Garden” (which has dialogue excerpts from the movie laid over the song’s instrumental sections) sandwiched between two short advertisments for a special cash winning contest only open to owners of this disc. Transparent sleeve with insert featuring additional contest details. Limited to 1,000 copies, as is mentioned on the second advertisment track.

Secret Garden ("Movie Dialogue Included [Jerry Maguire]") (no catalogue number)
Very rare early Dutch 1-track radio promo CDR single containing the abovementioned “Z100 Jerry Maguire Mix” of “Secret Garden” (albeit not under that name); issued in a standard jewel case with basic title insert. Despite its fairly amateurish, “home-made” look which has led many collectors to dismiss it as a fake, this disc actually is an official release manufactured by domestic company “Flevo Productions” on behalf of Sony Music Holland, in limited quantities of probably no more than 50 copies.

1998
We Shall Overcome
(NIGHT & DAY/RED HOUSE APR 1050)
Very rare France-only promotional release for the Various Artists Pete Seeger tribute album “Where Have All The Flowers Gone”. Basic yellow cardboard sleeve with red/green title graphics. Discs were pressed in Austria.

Sad Eyes / Janey Don't You Lose Heart / I Wanna Be With You / Hearts Of Stone (COL SAMP CM 6331)
Austrian promotional advance sampler for the “Tracks” box set containing one song each from the four CD's. Slimline jewel case with picture insert featuring small reproductions of the box front cover photo and title graphics; blue Sony promo sticker on back.

I Wanna Be With You / Lion's Den / Part Man, Part Monkey (COL CSK 41555)
"Tracks" EP issued exclusively as a bonus with both US and UK editions of the "Bruce Springsteen: Songs" book. Thick cardboard picture sleeve with similar overall artwork to the above 4-track promo.

Sad Eyes (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
Rare 1-track promotional single pressed in Poland. Plain slimline jewel case.

Sad Eyes (COL SAMPCS 6305)
Spain-only 1-track promotional single in sepia-toned cardboard picture sleeve with "Tracks" cover photo on front. Discs were imported from Austria.

My Hometown / Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town (live) (COL 38K 5728)
Odd US-only reissue of a then 13-year old "Born In The U.S.A." single. Cardboard cover with similar artwork to the original 1985 picture sleeve; featuring a black-and-white photo of Bruce standing in the front yard of his parents’ old home in Freehold, and script-style lettering.

1999
Sad Eyes / Missing / Man At The Top / Take 'Em As They Come
Issued in Europe (COL 666884 2) and South Africa (COL CDSIN 332); the latter issue being a picture disc. Slimline jewel case with weird, sepia-toned "art" insert. A European 2-track version in cardboard picture sleeve does also exist (666884 1).

Sad Eyes (COL CSK 41557)
US promotion-only single for radio stations containing the album version of "Sad Eyes" plus two "callout hooks" running for 10 and 5 seconds, respectively. Same picture insert as used for the commercial European 4-track CD.

Sad Eyes / I Wanna Be With You (COL XPCD 1144)
UK-only advance promotional release with same overall artwork as the commercial European “Sad Eyes” 4-track EP, but additionally carrying a circular sticker with handwritten release date “24/5” on front. This CD is particularly collectable for the fact that its planned commercial counterparts (two different CD single configurations and a cassette) eventually were scrapped by Sony in Britain.

Sad Eyes / I Wanna Be With You / Man At The Top (COL 667491 2)
Withdrawn first commercial UK pressing in slimline jewel case with picture insert. Very rare.

Sad Eyes / Born In The U.S.A. / Pink Cadillac (COL 667491 5)
Unreleased second UK configuration with different track line-up and alternate picture insert design/layout. Extremely rare.

Sad Eyes / The Fever / The Promise (COL 2-000510)
Rare Argentina-only promotional release; reportedly limited to 100 copies. Plain PVC sleeve.

Happy (COL SAMPCS 6476)
Spain-only 1-track promotional single (with discs again pressed in Austria) issued in a superb and unique black-and-white cardboard picture sleeve.

I Wanna Be With You / Where The Bands Are / Born In The U.S.A. / Back In Your Arms (Europe: COL 667025 2 / Japan: SONY SRCS 8800)
Colour picture insert with rear credits erroneously stating that all songs were "taken from the upcoming release '18 Tracks'", although "Back In Your Arms" was in fact not included on the single CD sampler.

I Wanna Be With You / Sad Eyes / Where The Bands Are / Born In The U.S.A. / Back In Your Arms (COL 667206 2)
Rare second Austrian pressing made for export to Germany. Picture insert features a few variations to the above 4-track version; including a larger reproduction of the front image and the back flap being red instead of black.

Tougher Than The Rest / Be True / Chimes Of Freedom / Born To Run (acoustic) (all live) (COL 667600 2)
Digitally remastered reissue of the "Chimes Of Freedom" EP originally released in 1988 to coincide with Amnesty International's "Human Rights Now!" benefit tour. Packaging, however, is considerably different to the initial version; featuring a 5-page fold-out insert with a unique live shot of Bruce on front and all song lyrics plus another exclusive concert photo inside, coming in a standard-size jewel case. Also released in Japan (as part of Sony's "cardboard packaging" reissue series that took in Springsteen's first six albums as well), South Africa and the US with different catalogue numbers; all four pressings include edited versions of both "Tougher..." and the title track.

Tougher Than The Rest / Be True / Chimes Of Freedom / Born To Run (acoustic) (all live) (SONY SRCS 8989)
Rare Japan-only picture disc. This was the second Japanese pressing which followed the original cardboard packaging version (with same catalogue number), coming in a regular jewel case. Special obi strip forms part of a spine image that was supposed to fit in with Sony Music Japan’s line of 1999 picture disc album reissues, but said image never got completed due to the series having been discontinued after “Nebraska”.
