[ IMPORTANT NOTE: From 2001 onwards, more and more promotional Springsteen singles/EP’s were issued on CDR’s (recordable CD’s), rather than factory-pressed silver discs. With this trend having continued over the years to the point of CDR promos now being very much the norm, the potential of “home-made” fakes reaching the collectors’ market has increased significantly. Hence, we can not guarantee that all the CDR releases listed on this page are in fact genuine, so let the buyer beware. ]
2001
American Skin (41 Shots) (studio
version) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
Extremely rare (and somewhat obscure) US-only radio promotion 1-track CDR single which contains an
otherwise unavailable 5:14 studio recording of American Skin. Slimline jewel case with white paper inlay featuring basic track info and a date of "April 24, 2001", while the disc itself has an "April 23, 2001" imprint; a second version - minus insert - also exists with two different dates (“April 19, 2001” and “Source Date: April 18, 2001”) printed onto the
disc.
American Skin (41 Shots) (live) (Edit) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue
number)
Canadian 1-track promotional CDR with totally unique artwork. 5:09 edited version of “American Skin” has the song's introduction shortened and features a premature fade-out during Clarence’s sax solo. Very rare.
American Skin (41 Shots) (live)
(single version) / Same (album version) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue
number)
US-only promotional CDR release in standard jewel case with plain white title insert. The
single version actually is the same edit as on the above Canadian issue.
American Skin (41
Shots) (Edit) / Land Of Hope And
Dreams / Born To Run / The River (all live) (COL SAMPCM 9988)
Austrian promotion-only Live In New York City Album Sampler EP in slimline
jewel case with colour picture insert. It is of note that this CD was also distributed in Israel, featuring a Hebrew-language promo sticker.
The River (live) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
Rare Spanish 1-track promotional single in colour cardboard picture sleeve. Contains a unique, radically shortened 4:44 radio edit.
The River (live) (COL SAMPCS 10381 1)
Austrian 1-track promotional single in plain white cardboard sleeve; even harder to find than the above Spanish
promo. Contains the full, unedited 11:15 "Live In New York City" album version.
I’ll Stand By You Always (Song For Harry Potter) / My Hometown
(live) / This Hard Land
(live) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
US-only Columbia “in-house” promo CDR EP that contains Bruce’s original version of his 2001 composition “I’ll Stand By You Always”; a ballad he originally wrote for his youngest son Sam Ryan and later donated to the soundtrack of the first “Harry Potter” film, “Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone” (hence the title “Song For Harry Potter”), although it ultimately wasn’t used for that movie (read more details
here). To this day, the song remains unreleased and uncirculated in any form, except for this
indescribably rare disc, of which probably no more than 5 copies - distributed exclusively to top Columbia executives and of course never reaching the open collectors’ market - were ever made. The two additional tracks are the same live recordings that appeared on the bonus CD single included with the “Live In New York City” DVD
(see below).
My Hometown / This Hard
Land (both live) (Europe: COL
SAMPCS 10881 / US: COL CSK 56656)
Given away exclusively with copies of the "Live In New York City" DVD and
containing two otherwise unavailable live recordings from the Madison Square Garden show
on June 29, 2000. Plain black die-cut cardboard sleeve. Also issued in Australia (COL SAMP 2402).
My Hometown / This Hard
Land (both live) (SONY SBCI 50002)
Very rare Japanese version of the above CD single that, as opposed to the rest of the world, was not made available with the “Live In New York City” DVD in Japan. Instead, the Japanese DVD merely contained a coupon for a competition entry to win copies, only a handful of which have reached the collectors' market in recent
years.
2002
The Rising (Europe: COL SAMPCS 11877 / US:
COL CSK 58940)
1-track promotional advance CD issued in slimline jewel case with picture insert. The
European pressing comes as a white disc with red title graphics, whereas the US version is
plain silver. Also released in Australia as a black disc with silver title graphics (COL SAMP 2483), although there was no commercial version of the
single in that country.
The Rising / Land Of Hope And Dreams (live) (Europe: COL 672997 1 [672997 9] / US: COL 79788)
Similar picture inserts for either pressing, but the US issue comes in a standard jewel case as opposed to the European slimline case. The European version is notable for carrying the catalog number 672997 9 on its insert, while the disc itself features a different code of 672997 1 (which, incidentally, also was used for a simultaneously released Austrian cardboard sleeve variant of this single).
Lonesome Day (COL
SAMPCS 12229)
European 1-track promotion single pressed in Austria. Plain slimline jewel case with no
insert, although an unknown number of copies included a German-language info sheet.
Lonesome Day (SONY;
no catalogue number)
Misprinted Japanese 1-track promotional single listing "The Rising" on
the disc while actually playing "Lonesome Day". Vinyl overlay stickers were
eventually used to correct the error. Slimline jewel case with picture insert.
Lonesome Day (Edit)
(COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
Rare US-only 1-track promotional CDR containing a unique 3:34 radio edit of the song. Standard jewel case with white title
insert.
Lonesome Day / Land Of
Hope And Dreams (live) (COL 673408 2)
UK-only release in this form. Slimline jewel case with picture insert featuring a
photo of Bruce from the Lonesome Day video shoot in Asbury Park. Note that -
despite a cover sticker incorrectly announcing an "exclusive live version" -
"Land Of Hope And Dreams" is the previously available recording off "Live
In New York City".
Lonesome Day / Spirit In
The Night (live/solo piano version) (COL 673272 1)
Europe-only release in cardboard picture sleeve with same overall artwork as the
above UK CD; discs were pressed in Austria.
Lonesome Day / Spirit In
The Night (live/solo piano version) / The Rising (live) / Lonesome Day (video) (Europe: COL 673272 2 / UK: COL 673408 5)
The first official enhanced Springsteen CD containing video bonus material (in
.mpg and .mov formats, which means that the clip can only be played on PCs). Either
pressing comes in a slimline jewel case; with the UK picture insert being tinted blue.
2003
Waitin' On A Sunny Day (Europe: COL SAMPCS
12486 1 / US: COL CSK 59160)
1-track advance promotional single. Both issues come in a standard jewel case with colour
insert depicting a very nice live shot from the "Rising" tour. Again, the
European version was pressed in Austria.
Waitin' On A Sunny Day / Spirit In The Night (live/solo piano version) / The Rising (live) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
Australia-only promotional CDR release in black cardboard sleeve with white title
sticker. Note that bonus tracks are identical to the European/UK "Lonesome Day"
CD EP's.
Waitin' On A Sunny Day
(Remix) (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
Very rare US-only 1-track promotional CDR containing a unique 4:13 remix of the song that is notably different to the album version released on “The Rising”. Standard jewel case with basic white title insert; the disc itself features an “abbreviated” song title of “Sunny Day”.
Waitin' On A Sunny Day / Born To Run (live) / Darkness On The Edge Of Town (live) / Thunder Road (live) (COL 673491 2)
Slimline jewel case with colour picture insert (same overall artwork as the abovementioned
1-track promotional singles); all bonus tracks were taken from the "Live In New York
City" DVD. The French release featured a large sticker on front announcing Bruce's
show at Stade de France in Paris on May 24, 2003. A European 2-track version issued in a
cardboard sleeve (673491 1) does also exist.
Waitin' On A Sunny Day / Born To Run
(live) / Darkness On The Edge Of Town (live - video) / Thunder Road (live - video) (COL 673583 2)
Enhanced CD containing two video clips taken from the "Live In New York
City" DVD. Australia-only release in this form; packaging is similar to the European
pressing.
Growin' Up (live acoustic) / Darkness On The Edge Of
Town (live acoustic) / This Hard
Land (live acoustic) / The Big
Muddy (live) (COL SAMPCM 12867)
Promotional "Live & Rare" EP issued as a freebie item for customers
purchasing any Springsteen CD at selected record stores throughout Europe during Bruce's
tour of the continent in May/June 2003. Cardboard title sleeve. "Growin' Up" and
"The Big Muddy" are recordings from the 1992 "MTV Plugged" session,
while "Darkness
" and "This Hard Land" were taped in Philadelphia
in December 1995. Note that all four tracks have been previously available on earlier CD
singles/EP's.
Viva Las Vegas (no catalogue number)
Odd promotional 1-track CD acetate pressed and distributed in Spain only; reportedly limited to 100 copies. Matrix number
TECNODISCO S.A. 281003PRO #1$ imprinted on the disc’s inner plastic ring. Very basic white cardboard title
sleeve.
Trapped (live) (SONY MUSIC; no catalogue number)
Irish 1-track promotional CDR acetate manufactured by Trend Studios in Dublin (who
have confirmed its authenticity) and issued to tie in with the release of "The
Essential Bruce Springsteen". Standard jewel case with generic title insert (white

Ireland contact phone number on front.

Change" tour on rear.

Rare UK "The Songs Of Warren Zevon" promotional sampler for the "Enjoy Every Sandwich" Zevon tribute album, containing the same tracks as the above US EP. Weird colour picture
insert.

1-track promotional single pressed in Austria for distribution throughout Europe. Slimline jewel case with unique sepia-toned picture insert (featuring a typically moody Anton Corbijn photo of Bruce that is not featured in the “Devils & Dust” album artwork); disc design is similiar to the above European “All I’m Thinkin’ About” promo.
All The Way Home (COLUMBIA; no catalogue number)
US 1-track promotional single in red cardboard sleeve with white Columbia logos.

Bobby Jean / The Ghost Of Tom Joad / Johnny 99 / For You / My City Of Ruins
(all live) (COL 88697 11292 2)
US-only “Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band PBS Exclusive” promotional EP; issued as a unique bonus item to donors supporting the “Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)” programming with a minimum “pledge” of $ 90.
It is of particular note that four of the five live tracks on this CD (recorded during Bruce’s three-show stand at The Point in Dublin, Ireland in November 2006, but left off the regular “Live In Dublin” multi-format release) are not officially available elsewhere. Colour cardboard picture sleeve incorrectly lists 2007 as the recording year on back; the disc itself also has a typo of “PBS
Exclsuive”.

Customers buying the disc - which retailed at a mere $ 0.99 - also received a $ 2 discount coupon good for purchase of the full “Working On A Dream” album (however, “Circuit City” unfortunately went out of business less than two weeks before it was
released).

Rare Finnish1-track promotional CDR single in clear plastic sleeve with black-and-white picture inlay (featuring same artwork as the above UK promo release of the regular album version, but additionally carrying a small Sony Finland sticker on front). This disc appears to be only "physical" medium to contain the "Modern Mix" of "Rocky Ground" (a reworked 3:21 edit which had previously been available solely as a streaming video on Springsteen's official website and YouTube VEVO channel), making it a particularly collectable item.
2013
